Adventure in Mexico!

The Sea of Cortez
Sea of Cortez, Mexico
Many of you have visited Xplore Offshore since reading about our inaugural trip to the Sea of Cortez with National Geographic. I had the great pleasure of traveling more than 600 miles up and down the Sea of Cortez and did much of it with nature photographer Woods Wheatcroft and the extraordinary writer- Eliza Griswold.

Some of what we did for National Geographic was documented, much of it was not. What did come through Eliza’s story is the essential elements of raw and pristine beauty, amazing sea-life and luxury camping. The Loreto area exceeded our expectations and I look forward to repeating some of what we saw and discovering even more incredible sights.

What you get when you go to Mexico is adventure. The word is so ubiquitous that it has nearly lost its meaning, but I will tell you that Mexico can serve it up. First, let’s consider the language barrier. While a speak a little high school Spanish, I am far from ever knowing what I am asking for or what I might be getting in any transaction. What I have universally found is a kindness and generosity that more than makes up for my useless Spanish skills. Next, the Sea of Cortex is beautiful yes, but when problems arise you don’t call the Harbor Patrol or Vessel Assist. When you travel, and more importantly, boat in Mexico, you have to be self-sufficient and you best bring two of everything. Lastly, you can never have too much water, ice, or cold beer. With Xplore Offshore- we don’t go to survive. Part eco-tour and part Magic Mountain thrill ride, guests can count on a safe and exciting trip with a complicated mix of relaxation, sea-life and luxury camping. We camp on a different beach of our choosing each night and find sites during the day to past the hours. Temperatures are 80 to 90 degrees in the day and nights are in the mid sixties. While snakes and scorpions can be found, the bugs are nearly non-existent and everywhere we go is safe for prudent and experienced campers.

Guests should be in good physical health and are expected to bring their own personal gear, a sleeping bag, and a good attitude with their current U.S. passport. I generally prefer to get some help with unloading the boat gear, but even that’s optional. Trips are limited. First, I am going to do four or five trips in May 06. Trip size is limited to approximately four guests. I believe in intimate experiences not a summer camp. Guests would arrive Loreto on Thursday. We will leave Loreto harbor on Friday morning early and return to the harbor early Monday morning. As each trip is private for the guests of that week, then plans are customizable for each group.

Approximate costs will range between $2,000 and $2,500 U.S. per person.

Send me an e-mail if you are interested in booking one of these once-in-a-lifetime trips. These trips are logistically complicated and best undertaken in May. Call with questions and we can discuss the possibilities.

Mexico too daunting? Why not book a camping trip to Catalina? Send us an e-mail for that too…
